Description
The company now known as DT Swiss has been drawing steel in Biel for over 350 years, with their spokes still made entirely in-house in Switzerland to the highest standards of quality and workmanship. The classic lightweight butted spoke, the Comp, is a cycling staple relied upon by everyone from commuters to World Cup downhillers; when in doubt, use Comps!
The 14/15 gauge double butted spoke is 1.8 mm thick in the centre to save weight, but 2 mm thick at the ends where strength is required. While other brands stretch and weaken their spokes to butt them, DT's unique and closely patented ultrasonic peening process cold forges the spokes, actually strengthening the metal. This gives DT spokes the best strength-to-weight ratio of any butted spokes.
Made exclusively from Swedish X5 stainless steel, custom blended specifically for DT, these spokes are finished in black using an electro-chemical treatment that is durable and does not weaken the spoke.
The rolling of the nipple thread does not remove any metal from the spoke, preserving the grain of the material. This maximises strength and greatly reduces the likelihood of failure at the threads, a common issue with lower quality spokes.
