First Look at New SRAM Red 2024
If the SRAM eTap groupset was a bold step forward in terms of delivering clutter-free, intuitive and consistent shifting, then the new SRAM RED 2024 platform could well be one giant leap that sets a whole new benchmark in ride experience, customisation and performance. We've taken a closer look at the components that make up this 12-speed groupset.

SRAM RED AXS HRD Shift-Brake System
SRAM RED eTAP is the company's flagship drivetrain system, sitting above Force, Rival and the entry level Apex systems. One significant advancement for the latest version of the wireless groupset is braking performance, with 80% less effort required to brake on the hoods and 33% less effort required to brake on the drops, when compared to its predecessor. One finger braking has never been within easier reach. Aesthetically and ergonomically the lever shape has had a major overhaul, catering for a much wider range of hand sizes.
This redesign of the levers provides better finger wrap on the hood which in turn means less fatigue on long days. Further adding to improved ergonomics, Contact Point Adjust and Reach Adjust allow for personalised braking engagement. Another neat touch on the levers is the Bonus Buttons that let you shift or control ANT+ devices with your thumbs.
A Lighter, New SRAM RED Groupset
The SRAM AXS setup is 153g lighter than the previous generation, in part due to the reduction of material used in the calipers. Control is improved with the textured shift paddles and hoods, while maintenance is kept simple with Bleeding Edge technology for easy and clean bleeds. Already possessing a silky smooth and quiet brake track, SRAM went about cutting the weight down on their Paceline X Rotors by giving it an even lighter aluminium carrier. This centerlock only design is available in 160mm and 140mm sizes.
SRAM RED Crankset and AXS Power Meter
Thought the previous iteration of the SRAM RED crankset was light? If so, think again. SRAM has shaved a further 29g from their hollow carbon crankarms, and for the first time ever, added a carbon 160mm crankarm length option to their range. X-Range gearing makes for smoother cadence changes when moving between the small to large chainring. In turn, this improves your ability to put power down. The one-piece 2x chainring cuts down on weight and improves stiffness and durability.
For those handy in the workshop, the DUB bottom bracket is a welcome addition, which is simple to install and maintain as well as being ultra durable. Whatever your preference when it comes to gearing the 50/37T, 48/35T and 46/33T chainring options will cater to your needs and for those looking to keep track of their performance the ability to upgrade to a power meter is a welcome addition.
SRAM RED eTap AXS Front Derailleur
The new SRAM RED eTap AXS Front Derailleur system has been completely overhauled and upgraded. Yaw technology with electronic trim results in the fastest possible shift while eliminating chain rub. This improved accuracy and speed of shift is thanks to a redesigned cage shape. The derailleur is now also even easier to set up, thanks to a simple to use, new tool.Compatible with 46/33T, 48/35T, 50/37T, 52/39T, 54/41T, and 56/43T chainrings, the versatility of this derailleur really is second to none.
SRAM RED eTap AXS Rear Derailleur
As with the front derailleur, the SRAM RED AXS eTAP Rear Derailleur also has had some serious development put into it. Allowing cassette configurations from 10-28T up to 10-36T, this wireless and electric system boasts larger pulleys to decrease chain articulation and in turn increase efficiency. Riding over rougher terrain? No worries, as the Orbit fluid damper is designed to keep everything in place. Equipped to be compatible with 1x or 2x setups, this derailleur is 16g lighter than the previous generation yet still uses the tried and tested existing battery to power it.
SRAM RED Chain
Lighter and more durable is the name of the game when it comes to the chain. The HollowPin construction is lighter and stronger than a solid pin, and cutouts in the outer and inner plates result in a reduction, when compared to the previous generation, of 13g. Iconic, the Flattop technology provides a narrower chain with quieter operation and increases strength and durability. Lasting the distance, Hard Chrome plated inner link plates and rollers prolong the life of the chain and reduce wear, ensuring you can spin freely knowing your riding one of the most efficient drivetrains on the market.
SRAM RED XG-1290 Cassette
A lightweight machined one-piece design with a 10-tooth starting sprocket, the SRAM RED® XG-1290 cassette progresses smoothly and quickly through a wider, more useful, range of gears. With at least five 1-tooth increments, gear progression is fast, so whether dropping through the smaller sprockets as you accelerate hard or responding to a rolling road, the shifting is precise and you won’t skip a beat.
Conclusion
Today's riders expect a smooth ride from their high performance groupset, giving them the ability to reach new limits. The new RED eTap AXS certainly delivers. Explore the newest 2024 products from SRAM here at Sigma Sports.
