The Cannondale SuperSix Evo 105 – Pro level technology at an affordable price.
The SuperSix name has been around for over 7 years with its first incarnation in 2006 and during that time has established itself as one of the leading road frames on the market with plenty of success at the pro races
In 2011 Cannondale took the SuperSix frame and gave it an update launching the SuperSix Evo, available in two versions, the standard Evo and the top of the range Evo HM. The main difference between the two frames is in then name, the HM features Hi-Mod carbon. The SuperSix Evo 105 has all the features of the top-of-the-range model, but keeps the cost down by using intermediate-modulus carbon.
Although this bike doesn’t technically sit in the “Aero Road” category, Cannondale have done a lot of work to make sure the frame is a slippery as possible. Thin down tubes and low profile fork blades help with aerodynamics, whilst the bike maintains a more traditional look with plenty of straight tubes and an appealingly horizontal top tube.
Frame construction in the SuperSix uses three separate sections; the head tube, top tube, down tube are bonded to the seat tube and bottom bracket which are made as one part, these are then bonded to the seatstays and chainstays. By using different widths in the construction of the top tube, adding more carbon where it’s most needed, Cannondale are able to produce an extremely lightweight, yet stiff and responsive frame.
The quality of the frame is reflected in the components and finishing kit used to complete the bike. Using Shimano 105 in the key areas of the drive train, front/rear derailleur and levers, combined with Tiagra brakes and cassette produces a great performing groupset at an affordable price. The well-known, high-quality FSA chainset completes the drive train, this chainset is not only great quality but looks the part too. The finishing kit uses Cannondale's own-brand handle bars, saddle and stem, all made of lightweight aluminium which offers great durability in case you kiss the tarmac!
The Shimano R501 wheels are the perfect set of all-round training wheels designed to cope with bumps and pot holes we experience here in the UK, but equally responsive when you turn on the power and jump out of the saddle.
We’d highly recommend the Cannondale SuperSix Evo 105 to anyone looking to purchase their first carbon road bike, with an eye on the scales (for the bike, not for you!) looking for the reliability and performance of Shimano 105 shifting at an affordable price. This bike is perfect for those summer sportives, both at home and climbing the mountains of Europe, you’re getting race-proven pedigree at an entry-level price point.
