Cervelo P5X eTap Triathlon Bike 2018
After years of research and development, modelling and remodelling, pro-rider feedback and countless aerodynamic test sessions the revolutionary Cervelo P5X eTap Triathlon Bike is ready to be unveiled. Cervelo has well and truly gone back to the drawing board with the design of the P5X to create a bike that provides a complete cutting-edge system, encompassing everything from customisable storage to an optimal fit, advanced aerodynamics and stress-free packing.
A Revolutionary Frameset Design:
Long distance triathlon bike training and racing requires riders to carry an enormous amount of kit with them. Cervelo found that an average age-grouper carries more than 1,600 calories of nutrition during an Ironman bike leg. That's far too much food for a jersey pocket, bento box or saddle bag so Cervelo realised a large amount of storage had to be integrated into their new P5X frame design.
With this in mind, the P5X's stealthy shape has been influenced as much by bottle and storage solutions as it has been by stiffness. In front of the bottom bracket, the Stealthbox provides essential storage for items like tubular tyres, CO2 inflators and tools. Also integrated into the downtube is the spacious removable Speedcase. This provides room for nutrition and clothing while also providing a different bottle orientation with bottle cage bosses on the top of the Speedcase.
On the top tube, the Smartpak storage sits behind the stem for an optimised aerodynamic profile. The Smartpak is perfect for essential items like bars and gels. Behind the saddle sits an adjustable single rear bottle mount. With all of this versatile storage, riders are able to fully customise both their riding and training setup to suit their needs.
Perfectly integrated into this superb frameset is Cervelo's fully customisable cockpit. Starting with the stem, height and angle can be fully adjusted with the simple seatpost-style stack adjustment. the stem cover hides electronic junction boxes while maintaining no-tool-required access for adjustment and charging.
On the extensions, pad stack has an adjustment range of 112mm while pad reach can be adjusted by a range of 91mm. there is also a bottle cage mount located between the extensions. The base bar itself can be flipped for an 80mm change in drop.
If you had not noticed already, the P5X does not have a seat tube. This allows for more storage space within the central triangle and a greater reduction in drag around the rear wheel. The pro favourite ISM PS 1.0 saddle is supported by an aerodynamic carbon seatpost. Adjustment and fitting are made easy with the single bolt seatpost height adjustment and for-aft clamp adjustment for 74˚ to 81˚.
World-Class Components for a World-Class Bike:
While the frameset is remarkable, the range of components that Cervelo have utilised to create the P5X are what really elevate it to its place at the top of the triathlon pecking order. Riding a long distance triathlon event like an Ironman requires you to take on a wide variety of conditions. That is why Cervelo have chosen the superb ENVE 7.8 SES wheels for the P5X. These deep-section carbon fibre wheels offer superb stiffness and aerodynamic performance. Their SES profile also means they perform superbly in crosswinds too, ensuring that you maintain balance and control.
Integrated with these wheels are Continental's GP 4000 II clincher tyres. The most popular tyres in Continental's range, the GP 4000 II provide a low rolling resistance, superb grip in a variety of conditions and lasting puncture protection.
Braking is taken care of with the TRP HY/RD Hydraulic Disc Brakes. Disc brakes on a triathlon bike may seem like a difficult concept to swallow, however, the supreme stopping power of hydraulic disc brakes in both the wet and the dry allow riders to attack corners with more confidence and speed. By carrying more speed into corners and braking later, these disc brakes account for faster times and a smoother riding experience.
A cutting-edge bike requires a top-of-the-range groupset and that is exactly what SRAM's Red eTap 11-speed groupset provides. Wireless shifting eliminates the need for pesky internal cabling while the Blip and Clic shifters dramatically streamline the profile of the bars while also creating an intuitive feel.
Features:
- Cervelo's three years of research and development — from CFD analysis to real-world and aerodynamic testing — has allowed them to engineer a complete system that harmoniously addresses speed, fit and usage.
- From aerodynamically integrated modular storage and stress-free packing to exceptional fit through unprecedented micro - and macro-adjustability, the world’s most technologically advanced tri bike focuses on a singular goal: Making it easier to achieve your Personal Best.
- The range of components that Cervelo has integrated ensure pro-level performance, speed and reliability.
