Parlee Altum Disc Frameset
Designed to bring disc brake framesets into the forefront of frame development, the Parlee Altum Disc Frameset is a revolution in disc compatible frame design.
Through a combination of complex FEA (Finite Element Analysis) modeling and physical testing, Parlee engineered a new layup process that places the high modulus carbon fibre in strategic areas to maximise weight reduction without negatively impacting strength or stiffness.
One look at the new frame design reveals more pronounced tube shaping and transitions than those of the Altum’s Z series predecessors. The top tube and head tube flare out where they meet, as do the seat tube and down tube at the bottom bracket area. The result: a super-light frameset with increased steering stiffness and pedaling efficiency.
Of course, it’s not just about stiffness and weight. Much of the carbon layup strategy is based on Parlee’s goal of attaining a certain ride quality. The Altum is engineered to feel responsive when you stand up and sprint but to have just enough compliance, especially in the rear triangle, to give it a smooth ride quality. All of the Altum models use a traditional round 31.6mm seatpost with a hidden, integrated binder, and they've introducing a new specially designed composite post that weighs just 185 grams and adds road-smoothing compliance.
Other new features include increased tyre clearance, from 23c to 28c, and a new fork design with an integrated carbon crown that helps increase stiffness while shaving 20 grams off the Z5 SLi's fork. The internal cable routing is compatible with all major component groups, electronic or mechanical, and has been designed to make installation and service as simple as possible.
The new Altum Disc is engineered specifically for disc brake use with some key frame and fork designs that allow for seamless integration. The frame features the same engineering, design and geometry as the other two Altum models, but with a modular rear dropout that accepts QR135 or through-axle 142mm wheels.
Up front, it has a specially built fork designed for the greater braking forces of disc brakes. It features a 15mm through axle design for added stiffness and steering precision. The frame and fork are fully compatible with mechanical or hydraulic braking systems and various rotor sizes (140-160mm) for added versatility and upgrade options.
