It was a typical cold and dark January evening but that didn't dampen spirits as we opened the doors of Sigma Sports to 90 guests. Picking up a drink and a copy of Wiggins' new book, Icons, the guests were able to mingle and take a closer look at some of Brad's extensive bike collection which was on display in the entrance. Two bikes that caught many people's eye were Miguel Indurain's Pinarello Dogma Time Trial Bike and the late Franco Ballerini's Paris-Roubaix machine of choice, the Colnago BiTan Road Bike.
It was soon time to take a seat on the first floor and wait for the man himself. Home Roads podcast founder and journalist, Matt Barbet, welcomed Sir Bradley Wiggins onto the stage. A warm reception for the dapper knight of the realm, Brad was relaxed as he answered questions and shared his experiences of growing up and the people that inspired him to get out on two wheels. Names such as Chris Lillywhite, Chris Boardman and Sean Yates were bandied around as Brad recounted stories of riding around the Herne Hill Velodrome as a kid.
Not just talking about his heroes, Brad also brought in a selection of pieces of memorabilia. These included a Fagor skinsuit and bloodstained Motorola jersey, both used by Sean Yates. Telling the captivated audience about how he acquired these items Brad clearly showed both a deep-rooted passion and encyclopedic knowledge of the sport. A highlight for many was Brad explaining Sean Yates' short shorts obsession, explaining he was told by Sean that it was due to his time in Nice where when he went down to the beach he didn't want cyclist tan lines.
Bringing the Q&A session to a close, now was the time for the guests to meet Brad in person and get their Icons books signed. An exclusive opportunity to meet a cycling legend it was a fitting and memorable way to conclude a fantastic evening in store.
