Sigma Sports-Cannondale Race Team
The Sigma Sports-Cannondale Race Team, continues for a 12th year in 2023. We are excited to reveal we will be supporting the team again for 2023, alongside Cannondale who have stepped up their backing to ensure the team will stay riding the best bikes in the business. The team will say farewell to Saddleback, one of their key sponsors over the last 6 years. As a parting deal, the riders will continue to race in Castelli kit through the 2023 season.
The squad in 2022 had some huge success both locally and internationally. Chris McNamara, the linchpin of the team, won pretty much every time trial he entered. He also grabbed a number of top 10s in his Nat B schedule, before finishing the season by winning the Mallorca Masters stage race and the Copa Europa single day race. Barney Purbrook, strong as ever, had an active race season competing locally in NatBs and internationally in Sardinia, Chicago (USA) and Mallorca. A highlight from Barney was winning the Hillingdon GP, Nat B race.
The strong results from Chris and Barney has meant the team will support and build a squad around them for 2023. Off the back of this 8 riders have left from the 2022 squad and 5 new faces have been added for 2023. Craig McLean continues his role as DS and has been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the future of the team remains strong.
“There was a point towards the end of the summer, when the team future was in doubt just like many other UK based bike racing teams,” explained McLean.
“However, working closely with Sigma Sports, we formulated a plan to allows us to continue into 2023. We are excited to get some new fresh faces into the team with a much-needed injection of youth. Chris and Barney will be working hard to shape those less experienced and TrainSharp is on board again to coach all our riders to be at their very best.”
The 2023 Team Line Up
Our new rider list starts with Simon McNamara, Chris’ twin brother and the first time the two have been on the same team since Team Synergy in 2008. He’s been racing since 1989 and will be joining Chris at Nat B’s, crits and TTs. Next are the London contingent consisting of Bryce Matthewson and Niels and Charlie Emmerson.
These three riders are relatively new to the racing scene but have proved their strength over 2022 and will join the Nat B squad together with mid-week crits. Lastly the local racing superstar that is Kevin Argent has been invited into the squad. Kev’s been racing as an individual in Sigma Sports colours for years and it will be a pleasure to have him rolling the masters crit scene with team DS Craig McLean.

Sigma Sports founder, Ian Whittingham said: “I was a little disappointed to not be asked to race in the 2023 season, however I love bike racing as do my kids who scream down the team at any race I can get them to. Supporting racing at its grass roots is what we at Sigma Sports have always done.”
